About the program

A youth baseball program that treats coaching like coaching

Develop. Train. Compete. Building better kids, one season at a time, out of Culver’s Marina.

The program

Baseball brings us together

Martinez Sports Development is a youth baseball travel team and development program at Culver’s Marina in Los Angeles, and it runs on one idea: develop the player, train the body, then let them compete.

It started with a simple frustration — too many youth teams where the best two players get all the reps and everyone else stands in the outfield waiting for the inning to end. So we built the opposite. A 9U travel team with a roster small enough that every player hits, fields and pitches. And a weekend development program where a class is one skill, taught properly, with the coach watching each player instead of the clock.

Alongside the skill work there is physical training: speed, strength, mobility and the arm care that keeps a young pitcher healthy. It is the same development work, done in the gym and on the grass instead of in the batter's box.

Most families find this program the way you probably did — from another family, or on Instagram. That is how a youth program should grow: a parent tells a parent because their kid had a good season. So we keep it honest. Skills, character and opportunity, and a stronger tomorrow through sports.

Head coach

Rafa Martinez

Coaches the 9U travel team and runs every weekend class out of our home field near Culver’s Marina. He is the coach every player in the program knows by name.

Three parts, one player

Everything the program does fits into one of these three. Families pick the part their player needs right now — some do all three.

Develop

Weekend classes, one skill at a time, in groups of 4 at $30 per player, per hour — plus week camp at $70 per day, per kid. Small enough that the coach sees your player's swing — not just the line of kids behind them.

Train

The body that plays the game. Speed, strength, mobility and arm care in groups of 10 to 12 at $40 per player.

Compete

A 9U travel team that plays real games — Wednesdays for pickup games and practice, Sundays for games, with a double header added when the roster sizes call for it.

What we believe about coaching kids

Fundamentals are not boring

A player who can throw, catch, run and swing properly will outgrow a player who only has raw talent. We build the base first.

Small groups, real coaching

Four players to a class at $30 per player, per hour. That means Coach Rafa actually sees your player's swing, not just the line of kids waiting behind them.

Confidence is the point

Kids play better when they are not afraid to make a mistake. We coach loud, correct quiet, and always send them home with something they did well.

Parents are part of it

You get a straight answer about where your player is and what to work on at home. No mystery, no politics.
